Prepared Song

This is definitely the most important part of the berklee guitar audition. Many students have a hard time choosing a specific piece of music, thinking that they should play the most difficult song they can find. The truth is, you should play something you enjoy, something that shows off your skills, and most importantly, a song you can play well. Now when it comes to guitar, a lot of players will wonder whether its ok to play a steve vai, petrucci, satriani style song. Although Berklee is  a jazz school, it is ok to play a virtuoso style song as long as you play it very well and try and add some originality. It is very difficult to instruct students on what song they should choose because each student has different skills and different styles of playing.

Here is a video of a Berklee student who played steve vai's For the Love of God- check it out at 2:21- as his audition piece

Another possibility is to write your own song, showcasing all of your skills. This is a great idea if your a really good songwriter.

Here is a video of a student who wrote a song for his audition piece. This is a "scholarship worthy song"

Good Luck! and if you have any questions, dont hesitate to ask!

  1. Hi! Is it a good idea to present a piece written by me, if i would like to choose a major in performance and not a in composition.

And my question is: Can I take my backing tracks on my laptop to play along? And do i need my personal gear (processor, pedals etc…)
