Improvising

During your guitar audition, you will be asked to improvise. A lot of players try and show off their "shredding" skills during this time. However, Berklee College of Music would rather hear a nice melodic improvised solo instead of soulless speed scales up and down the neck.

Tips

  • Use the whole neck, all positions. Dont just play up high (12th fret), or down low (5th fret)
  • Dont stay in the pentatonic too much. Use the modes
  • Spice your solos up using chromatic runs

Before you begin to improvise, they will either tell you what to jam on or ask for your suggestion. If they're the ones choosing, they will make you solo on a standard 12 bar blues. If you show any jazz skills in your prepared piece, they might ask you to improvise on some standard jazz changes (eg. autumn leaves) or a jazz blues.

They might ask you to choose the style, tempo and rhythm. In the case, make sure you have prepared a progression that you know you can improvise confidently over and make sure you are able to comp.

Here are some useful backing tracks to help you prepare
