Ear Training

The ear training portion of the guitar audition is very basic, and will take a few minutes to complete. Basically you are asked to repeat musical passages that are played either by singing them or playing them on your instrument. This is called call and responseThey usually play the music on a piano, sax or guitar and then ask you to repeat it.

One of the berklee College judges will start by playing one note. After you find that note he will begin the exercises starting with 2 to 3 note passages and gradually increase the difficulty by playing 6 -7 note passages. You will usually be asked to play back around 10 - 15 passages. Some students (usually drummers and melodic instruments) are asked to name the quality of certain chords- They play a chord on the piano and you have to state whether its Major, Minor, augmented, or diminished.

  1. How do they judge your ear training section? If i miss a note and know its wrong, will that count against me, or is it only if I would ask them to repeat the selection.

  2. Hi Cobrette, you can miss a note or two, it wont matter that much but if you do miss a note, fix it on spot... dont play the passage or melody with that wrong note... Do you know what we mean?

  3. So the judge will let student know the first note or no? Because its really hard to find out first note without having perfect pitch..
